Grave Exhumed in County Monaghan in Search for IRA 'Disappeared' Victim Joe Lynskey

Investigators believe the exhumation may uncover the remains of Joe Lynskey, who was abducted, murdered, and secretly buried by the IRA in 1972 during the Troubles.

  • Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains (ICLVR) exhumed a grave in Annyalla cemetery, County Monaghan, after receiving information about suspicious historical activity from the 1970s.
  • Joe Lynskey, a former Cistercian monk from Belfast who joined the IRA, was abducted and murdered in 1972 during an internal IRA feud and later added to the list of the 'Disappeared.'
  • The remains of more than one person were reportedly found at the site, and a formal process to identify them has begun, which the ICLVR says may take some time.
  • Lynskey is one of four remaining victims of the 'Disappeared' whose bodies have yet to be recovered; 13 of the 17 victims have been found and returned to their families.
  • The ICLVR, established by the UK and Irish governments in 1999, continues efforts to locate the remaining victims, including British Army Captain Robert Nairac, Columba McVeigh, and Seamus Maguire.
