Overview
- On July 1, Senator Chuck Grassley publicly released internal FBI emails showing that in late September 2020, FBI headquarters halted and recalled an Albany Field Office IIR alleging Chinese agents produced thousands of fraudulent driver’s licenses to influence mail-in voting.
- The emails indicate the report was pulled to avoid contradicting then-Director Christopher Wray’s September 24, 2020, testimony that the FBI had found no coordinated national voter fraud effort.
- Albany officials had rated the confidential human source’s claims with high confidence (9–10), but other field offices and intelligence partners were barred from reviewing the IIR or pursuing the investigation.
- Director Kash Patel declassified the related documents in mid-June and provided them to Grassley, who characterized the suppression as “political decision-making” that undermined the bureau’s credibility.
- Grassley has demanded additional records and a full investigation, though no Senate hearings have been scheduled and the FBI retains responsibility for verifying the allegations.
