Gérard Depardieu Ordered to Stand Trial in Paris on 2018 Rape, Assault Charges

A 2020 reopening of Charlotte Arnould’s complaint after an initial dismissal cleared the way for the trial order.

Overview

  • An investigating judge sent the case to criminal court on allegations of rape by digital penetration and sexual assault against Charlotte Arnould at Depardieu’s Paris home on Aug. 7 and 13, 2018.
  • The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed the decision, and a trial date has not yet been set.
  • Arnould, now 29, said she was relieved after “seven years of horror and hell,” in a statement posted on Instagram.
  • Depardieu denies wrongdoing and has said any encounter was consensual, and his lawyers did not immediately comment on the decision.
  • In May, he was convicted in a separate case of sexually assaulting two women on a 2021 film set, receiving an 18-month suspended sentence and sex-offender registration that he is appealing; a rape conviction in France can carry up to 15 years in prison.
