Grand Jury to Weigh Case of Ex–University of Kentucky Student as Affidavits Detail Birth and Concealment
Microscopic autopsy testing will determine whether additional charges are warranted.
Overview
- After waiving a preliminary hearing on Sept. 26, Laken Snelling’s case was forwarded to a Fayette County grand jury, and she remains on $100,000 bond under house arrest in Tennessee after pleading not guilty.
- An affidavit says roommates heard a loud noise around 4 a.m. on Aug. 27, later found a blood-soaked towel and a bag with childbirth evidence, and encountered police when Snelling returned to the apartment.
- Snelling told authorities she passed out after giving birth and later saw the infant turning blue and purple, and she told medical staff she heard a whimper and guessed the baby was alive.
- Police records state the infant was found in a closet wrapped in a towel inside a black trash bag, the remains appeared full term according to LEX18, and the coroner’s initial autopsy was inconclusive.
- Investigators say a phone search found queries about concealed pregnancy, images from labor and deleted birth photos that they believe could indicate efforts to hide evidence.
