Grand Jury Indicts Virginia Woman in Hamptons Hit-and-Run That Killed Netflix Realty Agent

Prosecutors say the driver paused only to try removing a suitcase trapped under her SUV before leaving the scene.

Overview

  • Amanda Kempton, 32, was indicted on a Class D felony for leaving the scene of a fatal incident and was arraigned Monday before State Supreme Court Justice John Collins.
  • The judge ordered her held on $100,000 cash, $200,000 bond or $1 million partially secured bond while the case proceeds.
  • Prosecutors allege she stopped immediately after striking Sara Burack, tried to dislodge the victim’s pink-wheeled suitcase, then drove off dragging it and later threw it away in a dumpster.
  • Burack, 40, was hit on West Montauk Highway at about 2:26 a.m. on June 19, was found unconscious by a passerby at 2:45 a.m., and died later that day at Stony Brook University Hospital.
  • Detectives traced a 2004 Toyota Highlander with front-end damage to Manorville and arrested Kempton on June 20; she has pleaded not guilty, and her next court date is Nov. 20.
