Grand Jury Indicts Six in Savannah Mall Shooting on 71 Counts, Including Felony Murder

Several defendants were minors at the time but will be tried as adults as the case moves into Chatham County courts.

Overview

  • A Chatham County grand jury returned a 71-count indictment in the July 2 Oglethorpe Mall shooting, with more than 50 counts identified as gang-related.
  • The six defendants — Royce Haynes, Aujawan Hymon, Franklin James, Dahmil Johnson, Jonathan Jones and Theron Robbins — are ages 16 to 20.
  • Prosecutors charged them with felony murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault and firearm offenses, and said those who were under 18 at the time will be prosecuted as adults.
  • The District Attorney’s office announced the indictments and said it will not provide additional comment while the criminal matter proceeds in court.
  • A veteran defense attorney said the case’s breadth could be difficult to present to jurors and that establishing gang affiliation and felony murder may prove challenging, while the mayor said residents expect accountability.
