Grand Jury Indicts Ex-NYPD Officer and Long Island Driver in Fatal 100 MPH Crash

A special prosecutor from the state attorney general's office is leading the case because it involves an off-duty officer.

Overview

  • A Suffolk County grand jury charged Stanley Luc Cadet, 27, and Kayla Lopez, 28, with second-degree manslaughter, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, excessive speed, and failure to obey a traffic control device.
  • Prosecutors say the drivers sped side-by-side at roughly 100 mph through a steady red light on Union Boulevard before colliding near the Route 231 overpass.
  • Investigators estimate Cadet’s Hyundai at 99 mph and Lopez’s Infiniti at 108 mph over about a half-mile, after which Lopez’s car hit multiple telephone poles.
  • Passenger Anna Wilson, 22, was ejected and pronounced dead, and multiple others were injured, including Brianna Dillon, who suffered serious injuries.
  • Both defendants pleaded not guilty, were released under supervised release with their licenses suspended, are due back in court Nov. 17, and Lopez’s attorney disputes the speeding claim and says she hit a pothole.
