Overview

  • A Colorado grand jury returned an indictment charging Barry Morphew, 57, with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Suzanne, five years after her disappearance in May 2020.
  • He was arrested in Gilbert, Arizona, on June 20, 2025, and authorities will seek to extradite him to Colorado’s San Luis Valley to face trial.
  • Investigators located Suzanne’s remains in a shallow grave near Moffat, Colorado, in September 2023, and the El Paso County Coroner ruled her death a homicide from a mix of tranquilizers used in wildlife sedation.
  • Initial murder charges filed in May 2021 were dismissed in April 2022 after prosecutors mishandled evidence and were sanctioned, leading to the disbarment of the original prosecutor, Linda Stanley.
  • The case was revived by the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office under Anne Kelly after long-delayed toxicology results and renewed forensic analysis prompted the fresh charges.
