Grand Canyon North Rim Begins Phased Reopening After Dragon Bravo Fire Contained

Post-fire hazards force limited hours, self-sufficiency requirements, continued closures, minimal emergency response.

Overview

  • Officials declared the Dragon Bravo Fire 100% contained, noting interior smoke may continue as remaining fuels burn within the perimeter.
  • Beginning Oct. 1, the park reopens Cape Royal Road and a stretch of Highway 67 to the W1 road from sunrise to sunset, allows overnight use only at Fire Point and Swamp Ridge, and restores access to the Cape Royal, Cliff Spring, Cape Final and Roosevelt Point trails plus a short Ken Patrick Trail segment; open areas are slated to remain accessible through Nov. 30 or until first snowfall.
  • Significant closures persist due to safety and damage, including the North Kaibab Trail after rockfalls and infrastructure impacts, with no power, running water, fuel, cell service or visitor services and limited emergency response in reopened zones.
  • Kaibab National Forest reduces closures Oct. 1 by reopening just over 25,000 acres between Saddle Mountain Wilderness and Highway 67—including Arizona Trail Passage 40—bringing public access to nearly 90% of the North Kaibab Ranger District.
  • The wildfire burned more than 145,000 acres and destroyed or damaged over 100 structures, including the Grand Canyon Lodge, as suppression-repair and recovery work continue to guide phased public access.
