Granada Turns Out for Virgen de las Angustias Procession as Restored Treasures Debut

The cortejo completed its route, including a Cathedral station with military honors.

Overview

  • On Sunday, 28 September, the annual procession set off from the basilica at about 5:30 p.m. after doors opened at 4:30 and early-morning masses began at 6 a.m.
  • Archbishop José María Gil Tamayo led prayers at the Cathedral station, with Mayor Marifrán Carazo and Lt. Gen. José Manuel de la Esperanza present as the Army rendered honors.
  • Newly restored heritage pieces debuted, notably an 18th‑century sudario restored by cordobés bordador Antonio Villar, alongside a refurbished horquilleros standard and gold‑embroidered cushions for the Cristo Yacente.
  • The cortejo featured the emblematic palio, the Seises accompanying to the Cathedral, and seven musical formations including the Infantry Academy band from Toledo.
  • Thousands lined central streets under threatening clouds as the paso, adorned with nardos and white‑yellow roses, completed the planned route and returned to the basilica at night.
