Overview
- The Diputación de Granada approved a €500,000 budget on May 29 to support West Nile virus control in municipalities with fewer than 20,000 residents.
- The funding is part of the Andalusian Strategic Plan for the Surveillance and Control of Arthropod Vectors with Impact on Health (PEVA), which obliges towns to implement mosquito surveillance or action plans based on their risk status.
- Risk assessments categorize 19 municipalities at medium risk, four at high risk and the rest at low risk following 2024 detections in Atarfe, Santa Fe, Valle del Zalabí and Pinos Puente.
- Francis Rodríguez, president of the provincial council, described the measure as the first targeted response to a recent public health challenge that demands swift, effective action.
- In the same plenary session, councillors also approved €1.2 million to purchase the Casa Dengra in Baza for cultural, tourist, social and administrative use alongside additional funds for water infrastructure and emergency services.
