GPS-Tagged Burglar of Damien Hirst’s Studio Jailed for 32 Months

GPS tag data, corroborated by DNA, underpinned the prosecution.

Overview

  • Liam Middleton-Gomm was sentenced at Kingston Crown Court after pleading guilty to two burglaries at Hirst’s Thames Wharf Studios.
  • He broke in on 30 June by smashing a window and triggering a shutter to enter the building, according to the prosecution.
  • About £5,130 of items were taken, including embellished leather jackets, clothing and a Dior pram with silver skulls, and some property remains unrecovered.
  • Investigators traced his movements using a court-ordered GPS ankle tag and matched DNA from the scene before charging him.
  • The judge cited 39 prior convictions involving 83 offences as an aggravating factor, while his father received a one-year conditional discharge for handling stolen goods and the prisons minister highlighted a record 22,000 tagged offenders as part of an expansion drive.
