GPA Seeks €2,500 Average State Grant for Inter-County Players in Pre-Budget Push

The union cites an independent report to argue that players generate major economic value despite significant personal costs.

Overview

  • The Gaelic Players Association lodged a pre-budget request to raise the average grant to €2,500 per player, a total annual outlay of about €10 million.
  • Current averages are €1,471 for male players and €920 for female players, with the scheme costing roughly €5.4–€5.6 million a year.
  • Indecon’s 2023 analysis estimated a €591 million total economic impact from inter-county players and 4,212 jobs directly supported.
  • Evidence presented by the GPA says players are over €4,600 out of pocket annually, lose about €3,500 in potential overtime, and are €1,499 worse off than in 2018.
  • The case was presented to Ministers Jack Chambers, Patrick O'Donovan and Charlie McConalogue, with a government decision yet to be announced; extending sportsperson tax relief was noted as a separate policy option worth over €4,000 per player.
