Goyal Touts 500GW Integrated Grid as India Courts Data Centres

He said years of reforms have made power supply dependable enough for energy-intensive growth.

Overview

  • The commerce and industry minister said India now runs a single national grid of about 500 GW that can handle redundancy and demand surges from large server farms.
  • He cited the system’s ability to meet a record 250 GW peak and a drop in power shortages to 0.1% in 2025 from 4.2% in 2013.
  • Renewables have expanded sharply, with solar capacity up roughly 46 times since 2014 and wind rising to 53 GW, which he said has lifted non-fossil sources to 50% of installed capacity.
  • On conventional fuel, Goyal reported record coal output of 1,048 million tonnes in FY 2024–25 alongside an about 8% decline in coal imports.
  • He pointed to stronger distribution finances under PM-UDAY and said the SHANTI Bill before Parliament would open more nuclear participation and scale small modular reactors.
