Goyal Cites 7.8% Growth, Signals Support for Exporters Under US Tariffs

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal urges a shift to higher value-added exports.

Overview

  • The US administration led by President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on several Indian goods, affecting sectors including textiles, apparel, gems and jewellery, shrimp and leather.
  • Goyal said India remains open to trade talks with the United States but will not succumb to pressure or appear weak in response to unilateral measures.
  • He told PTI that more than $46 billion of the roughly $87 billion in Indian exports to the United States are unaffected by the tariff action.
  • The minister urged industry to move beyond a domestic “cosy comfort zone,” pushing for greater value addition and stronger global branding, with examples such as exporting ready-to-eat foods rather than raw staples.
  • As short-term relief, he discussed with industrialist Noel Tata the temporary sale of tariff-hit goods in the local market at discounted prices and pledged government steps to support exporters and expand outreach.
