Gowda Refuses to Take Bengaluru Development Charge Over Control of BDA and BMRDA

A final call by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar or the Congress high command will decide whether Gowda gains authority over the two planning bodies.

Overview

  • Krishna Byre Gowda has not formally assumed the Greater Bengaluru Development portfolio and says he will wait for clear responsibilities before taking charge.
  • D.K. Shivakumar has kept the Bangalore Development Authority and the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region Development Authority under his control rather than placing them with Gowda.
  • Under the current allocation Gowda would oversee the Greater Bengaluru Authority, the five city corporations, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board and Bengaluru Metro.
  • The dispute matters because BDA and BMRDA supervise very large projects such as the Bengaluru Business Corridor, the Hebbal tunnel and the Bidadi township, and control affects implementation and political credit.
  • The row is part of wider post‑cabinet jockeying in the Karnataka Congress that has produced protests and lobbying by other leaders and could delay project decisions until the CM or party high command resolves it.
