Governor Calls for Warming To Belt and Road
California Governor Embarks on Climate Diplomacy Tour of China
- California Governor Gavin Newsom is embarking on a diplomatic visit to China with the primary focus on climate change discussions. His administration stated that the governor will avoid tackling other contentious issues involving Beijing during this trip.
- Governor Newsom's comprehensive journey includes visiting key Chinese cities like Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai. Appropriate meetings have been arranged with both regional and national Chinese representatives for discussing potential climate collaborations.
- Newsom plans to visit a Tesla factory in Shanghai that has produced 2 million electric vehicles since 2019. He's also expected to visit a Shenzhen bus depot that switched to an all-electric bus fleet in 2018. Both these visits are considered significant in light of California's aggressive goal of banning the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035.
- During his visit to the Guangdong province, Newsom is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding with local officials about decarbonizing industries and promoting clean energy. Similar agreements will be signed in Beijing and Jiangsu contributing to the advancement of climate cooperation between the two sides.
- Newsom's trip to China also comes at a significant moment for global climate action, after California demonstrated one of the cleaner energy grids in the U.S. His visit is furthering California’s strategy of fostering international co-operation and forging climate-focused partnerships with other jurisdictions interested in various aspects of the climate crisis.
