Government’s Aggregated Bürgergeld Name List Puts Mohammed at No. 1

Officials caution that the partial dataset cannot support conclusions about nationality.

Overview

  • After an AfD follow-up request, the government combined 19 Mohammed spellings for roughly 39,280 entries, ahead of Michael (24,660) and Ahmad (20,660).
  • The earlier July list treated spellings separately, which had placed Michael, Andreas and Thomas at the top.
  • Aggregation lowers names with fewer variants, with Andreas at 18,420 and Thomas at 17,920 in the updated ranking.
  • The figures cover only jobcenters in gemeinsamer Einrichtung, so they do not represent all recipients.
  • At the end of 2024, 5.42 million people received Bürgergeld, of whom 52% were German and 48% were foreign, according to the Bundesagentur für Arbeit.
