Government Warns TV Channels Over Red Fort Blast Coverage That Could Aid Unlawful Acts

The notice invokes Cable Television rules to warn that such content risks inciting violence, compromising national security.

Overview

  • India’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry issued an advisory on November 18 to all private satellite TV channels following coverage of the Red Fort car-bomb case.
  • The ministry cited instances of broadcasts showing how to make explosive material and videos of accused persons framed as justifying violence.
  • Broadcasters were reminded to ensure strict compliance with the Programme and Advertising Code and Rules 6(1)(d), 6(1)(e) and 6(1)(h) of the Cable Television Network Rules.
  • The advisory was circulated to self-regulatory bodies, electronic media associations and the Broadcast Seva Portal.
  • Investigations continue under the NIA with a reported link to a Jaish-e-Mohammad Faridabad module, a Delhi court remanded accused Jasir Bilal Wani to 10-day NIA custody, and officials say the blast killed at least 12 people as agencies track Pakistan-based propaganda efforts.
