Government Unveils Great British Railways Branding as Rail Overhaul Advances in Parliament

A phased rollout from next spring will start on state-owned services, with the new public body expected to be established in 2027.

Overview

  • - The red, white and blue Union Flag-inspired livery and a new logo incorporating the classic double arrow were revealed, with designs created in-house to cut costs.
  • - Station displays launched at London Bridge and on screens in Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Leeds, ahead of branding appearing on trains, stations and digital assets from spring 2026.
  • - The Railways Bill had its second reading as ministers seek to merge 17 organisations into a single publicly owned operator and introduce a strengthened passenger watchdog.
  • - A GBR ticketing app is in development to provide a one-stop shop for timetables and ticket purchases without booking fees, including Passenger Assist features, alongside a freeze on regulated fares in England.
  • - Seven major operators are already in public hands, covering about a third of journeys, and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander says GBR is slated to be formally established in 2027, with early reaction to the design ranging from sharp criticism to praise.
