Government to Reconsider Waspi Payout Refusal After 2007 DWP Report Emerges

The move follows the rediscovery of a 2007 DWP evaluation cited in Waspi’s legal challenge.

Overview

  • Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said the December decision will be retaken and stressed the review does not imply financial redress.
  • Ministers will withdraw from the High Court judicial review that had been scheduled for 9–10 December while the new evidence is assessed.
  • The rediscovered document is a 2007 DWP evaluation of automatic pension forecast letters that was not provided to Liz Kendall before last year’s decision.
  • The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman found maladministration and recommended payments of £1,000–£2,950 per affected woman, with a potential cost up to about £10.5bn.
  • An estimated 3.6 million women were impacted by state pension age changes, and the Waspi campaign says it is taking legal advice after welcoming the announcement.
