Government to Introduce Impeachment Motion Against Justice Varma in July Monsoon Session

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is consulting opposition parties to secure cross-party support for the rare impeachment process following a Supreme Court-appointed inquiry’s finding of misconduct

Overview

  • A three-member Supreme Court-appointed committee indicted Justice Yashwant Varma on May 4 after firefighters discovered stacks of burnt cash at his Delhi residence during a March 14 fire
  • Then-Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna forwarded the inquiry report to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi when Varma refused to resign
  • Under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, the motion must be signed by at least 100 Lok Sabha or 50 Rajya Sabha MPs and pass with a two-thirds majority in the initiating House
  • Kiren Rijiju has met leaders from major parties, including the Congress, as he seeks unanimous backing before Parliament convenes around July 21
  • Justice Varma denies any wrongdoing, remains transferred to the Allahabad High Court and has not been assigned judicial duties pending the parliamentary process
