Government Shrinks Argentina's Nuclear Agency Structure to 272 Units

It requires the CNEA to submit a detailed lower-level plan within 60 days to cut bureaucracy.

Overview

  • The executive branch published Decree 655/2026 in the Boletín Oficial on Monday, formalizing a new first-level organigram for the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA).
  • The reform cuts the agency’s maximum organizational units from 645 to 272, a reduction of about 58 percent according to the decree’s official diagnosis.
  • The decree creates seven area directorates for core functions such as nuclear energy, large projects, medicine and radioisotope production, and sets new caps for lower levels: up to 32 second-level gerencias, 48 subgerencias, 168 departments and 7 divisions.
  • Authorities must present a detailed plan for the remaining lower-level structure within 60 days, and the government says the reorganization will be funded with the CNEA’s existing budget credits rather than new appropriations.
  • The change affects the central office, atomic centers and ongoing projects and could alter staffing and project management for reactors and medical radioisotope programs such as CAREM and RA-3.
