Overview

  • Government ministers have begun outreach to opposition parties as part of an imminent signature drive for Justice Varma’s removal motion.
  • Under the Judges (Inquiry) Act of 1968 and constitutional Articles 124 and 217 the motion requires sponsorship from at least 100 Lok Sabha MPs and 50 Rajya Sabha MPs.
  • Parliament’s Monsoon Session has been extended until August 21 to accommodate signature collection and potential parliamentary action in the same sitting.
  • Upon submission of the motion the presiding officer will appoint a three-member parliamentary committee to examine the allegations of unaccounted cash.
  • Officials are exploring special provisions to reduce the committee’s standard three-month reporting period for a faster resolution.
