Government Raises Vehicle Fitness Fees Up to 10x With New Age-Based Slabs

The change takes immediate effect nationwide to push older, higher-emitting vehicles toward scrappage and safer replacements.

Overview

  • MoRTH lowered the higher-fee threshold from 15 to 10 years and introduced three brackets of 10–15, 15–20, and over 20 years.
  • Reported figures show the steepest hikes for vehicles over 20 years: heavy commercial vehicles ₹25,000 (from ₹2,500), medium ₹20,000, LMVs ₹15,000, three-wheelers ₹7,000, and two-wheelers ₹2,000.
  • Even under 15 years, revised Rule 81 raises baseline fitness charges to ₹400 for motorcycles, ₹600 for light motor vehicles, and ₹1,000 for medium and heavy commercial vehicles.
  • The age-based structure applies across categories including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, quadricycles, LMVs, and medium and heavy goods or passenger vehicles.
  • Media reports carry conflicting amounts for some categories, so owners and operators should consult the official MoRTH/Gazette notification for definitive rates.
