Government Raises Diesel by Rs1.91 While Keeping Petrol Steady

Officials say the change reflects higher import costs after recent Houthi attacks raised global crude and freight premiums.

Overview

  • The Petroleum Division notified on Friday that high-speed diesel will rise by Rs1.91 to Rs393.66 per litre for October 24–26, while petrol will remain at Rs377.71 for the same period.
  • The diesel hike follows Thursday’s Rs1.64 increase and brings the combined rise over two successive daily reviews to Rs3.55 per litre.
  • OGRA said the revision was driven by changes in Platts benchmark rates, higher premiums and incidentals in import costs following disruptions in the Middle East.
  • Fixed levies and set dealer and oil-marketing margins limit how much retail prices can move, and diesel gains are likely to raise transport and freight costs that feed into food and goods prices.
  • The government moved to a daily pricing mechanism in July and has paired the recent adjustments with targeted relief for small-engine vehicle users to shield lower-income consumers from petrol price swings.
