Government Puts £237 Million Into 36 Community Diagnostic Centres

The upgrade aims to cut waits by moving more scans and checks into local hubs.

Overview

  • Following Monday’s funding announcement, the plan covers four new centres and upgrades at 32 existing sites across England.
  • New hubs in Gorton, Luton, Boston and Bideford are slated for 2026/27, with some added capacity starting this year as new rooms and equipment open.
  • In 17 centres, teams will add space and install MRI, CT and ultrasound scanners to raise throughput, while 15 others will get specialist kit and services such as audiology and ophthalmology.
  • Local projects include extra ultrasound, an x-ray and a hysteroscopy suite at Gateshead’s Metrocentre, two CTs and a new MRI at Exeter’s Nightingale site, a second MRI in Hull, and an enhancement at Liverpool’s Paddington hub.
  • CDCs are placed in high streets and retail parks with many open 12 hours a day, a model meant to cut travel and ease hospital pressure as charities urge more mammography and dementia biomarker testing.
