Government Panel Convenes to Draft SOPs After Air India Dreamliner Crash

Chaired by Home Secretary Govind Mohan, the panel convened on June 16 to review past air crash protocols with the aim of shaping future procedures

Overview

  • The June 13 crash of Air India Flight AI-171 after takeoff from Ahmedabad killed 214 people on board, 30 on the ground and left one survivor.
  • India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is leading the technical probe with support from the US NTSB and Boeing to extract and analyze flight data and cockpit voice recorders.
  • A high-level government committee formed on June 15 held its first meeting to study past accident responses for improved procedural guidelines.
  • The committee has access to all relevant records, including flight data, maintenance logs, ATC communications and witness statements to inform its recommendations.
  • The CPI(M) has demanded revised terms of reference to avoid overlap with the AAIB probe and urged the panel to focus on enforcing safety buffers around airports.
