Government Details Transition to New Rural Jobs Law as MGNREGA Cards Remain Valid

The Act will begin after central rules are issued, with states given six months to put their own schemes in place.

Overview

  • Officials said the VB-G RAM G law, passed in the winter session and assented to by the President, will take effect once rules are framed and notified, with no exact start date yet.
  • Existing MGNREGA job cards will be accepted during the shift to the new system, and about 75% of cards have been verified for use.
  • Ongoing MGNREGA works will continue during the rollout to avoid disruption in wage employment.
  • The new law lifts the annual guarantee to 125 days per rural household, keeps the programme demand-driven, and strengthens the unemployment allowance provision.
  • Projects must stem from Gram-level plans and focus on durable assets in water security, core rural infrastructure, livelihood infrastructure, and climate resilience, with expanded transparency via social audits, weekly disclosures, an e‑measurement book, and digital capture of work demand.
