Government Commits $37 Million to National Continuous Checks for Working With Children

The ACIC pilot is slated for rollout to states by year’s end to close interstate loopholes.

Overview

  • The National Continuous Checking Capability will provide ongoing, near real-time alerts on changes to WWCC holders’ criminal history for assessment by screening units.
  • Five jurisdictions—New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania—have moved to recognise interstate negative decisions, with the ACT, Northern Territory and Western Australia on track to legislate by year’s end.
  • States and territories must modify and fund their own systems to connect to the federally funded pilot, and there is no deadline for jurisdictions to sign up.
  • Attorneys-general are meeting in Brisbane to discuss the rollout and steps toward greater consistency in how WWCC risks are assessed across jurisdictions.
  • The move follows a series of alleged abuse cases in childcare settings and complements July laws enabling the Commonwealth to withhold Childcare Centre Subsidy from unsafe providers.
