Government Cites 6X Electronics Output, 8X Exports as India Ranks No. 2 in Mobile Manufacturing

  • In posts on December 27, Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reported electronics production rose from Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014–15 to Rs 11.3 lakh crore in 2024–25, while exports climbed from Rs 0.38 lakh crore to Rs 3.3 lakh crore.
  • Under the Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing PLI, the ministry reports Rs 13,475 crore in investment and about Rs 9.8 lakh crore in production, with electronics manufacturing creating roughly 25 lakh jobs over the decade and over 1.3 lakh in the past five years.
  • India is described as the world’s second‑largest mobile manufacturing country, with around 300 units, Rs 5.5 lakh crore in handset production, Rs 2 lakh crore in exports, and 99.2% of handsets sold domestically made in India.
  • The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme has received 249 applications representing Rs 1.15 lakh crore in proposed investment, an expected Rs 10.34 lakh crore in production, and a projected 1.42 lakh jobs, according to the minister.
  • Vaishnaw said ten semiconductor units have been approved, three are in pilot or early production, and domestic fabs and ATMPs are expected to begin supplying chips to phone and electronics manufacturers.
