Government Backs CFMEU Administration as Probe Opens into Reported Mick Gatto Meeting

The administrator responded by opening an investigation after Zach Smith apologised for directing a staffer to meet the underworld figure.

Overview

  • Industrial Relations Minister Amanda Rishworth said the government retains full confidence in the CFMEU administration as the strongest available action and intends for it to remain until the job is done.
  • The Sydney Morning Herald reported that on September 12 Zach Smith directed a union employee to meet Mick Gatto in Melbourne over a dispute involving a company working for the Melbourne Airport operator, and Smith has apologised.
  • Administrator Mark Irving has launched an investigation and issued new rules restricting contact with industrial fixers such as Gatto.
  • The Herald reported Gatto sought for Maz Group to work free of union pressure and for CFMEU concerns to be channelled through him, with no suggestion he committed any offence and with Gatto previously denying wrongdoing.
  • Opposition figures said public trust in the clean-up has collapsed, while the Herald’s editorial called for a judicial inquiry with royal commission powers to compel evidence.
