Government Backs CFMEU Administration After Gatto Meeting

New rules limiting contact with industrial fixers accompany the administrator’s investigation.

Overview

  • Former national secretary Zach Smith directed a CFMEU organiser to meet Mick Gatto on September 12 over a dispute involving contractor Maz Group on Melbourne Airport works, then issued an apology.
  • Administrator Mark Irving ordered an internal investigation and released a policy barring meetings with industrial fixers such as Gatto except in tightly defined circumstances.
  • Industrial Relations Minister Amanda Rishworth said the administration remains the strongest tool to eliminate corruption from the union, with Andrew Giles calling the reports concerning.
  • The opposition accused the government’s clean‑up effort of losing public trust and pressed for tougher inquiry powers.
  • There is no suggestion Gatto committed an offence in relation to the meeting, he did not respond to questions, and he has previously denied wrongdoing in construction dealings.
