Government Approves Rs 16,241 Crore Upgrade for Mumbai Suburban Railway Network

Formal approval has set the stage for phased corridor expansions to tackle chronic overcrowding across Mumbai’s rail system

Overview

  • Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced sanction of 12 projects spanning central, harbour and western corridors with a combined cost of Rs 16,241 crore
  • Key expansions include CSMT–Kurla Lines 5 and 6, a sixth line between Mumbai Central and Borivali, and an extension of the Harbour Line from Goregaon to Borivali
  • Detailed planning is now under way and corridor works will be rolled out in phases over the coming years
  • Indian Railways has initiated procurement of 238 new air-conditioned train rakes fitted with automatic doors to bolster commuter safety and reduce overcrowding accidents
  • This initiative builds on the Mumbai Urban Transport Project to boost service frequency, reliability and regional connectivity for over eight million daily passengers
