Gottesman Pool Opens in Central Park as Lifeguard Recruitment Continues

The Davis Center facility marks a key milestone in the city’s ‘Let’s Swim NYC’ initiative, offering free swim lessons, lap swim sessions and seasonal sports conversions with lifeguard certification set to conclude mid-July

The city is opening its new Gottesman Pool, the centerpiece of the $160 million Davis Center near the Harlem Meer. City officials welcomed swimmers Thursday, one day before outdoor pools open across the boroughs.

Overview

  • The 285-foot-long Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center launched June 27, replacing the Lasker Rink & Pool and operating daily from 11 am to 7 pm with a cleaning break from 3 to 4 pm.
  • Admission is free without ID, and the facility features updated locker rooms, shaded seating and a free summer meals station for children under 18.
  • New York City Parks has certified 680 lifeguards so far and will continue recruitment through mid-July to staff its 65 outdoor pools.
  • Beginning July 7, the pool will offer free Learn to Swim classes and adult lap swim sessions as part of the Let’s Swim NYC initiative.
  • After summer, the pool basin converts into a turf field during the fall and into the Harlem Oval ice rink in winter.
