Overview
- Google rolled out the update on Thursday, October 29, making inline file generation, preview and in-chat editing available in the Gemini app and web interface.
- Gemini can generate files in standard export formats such as PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, LaTeX, TXT, RTF and Markdown and can also produce Google-native Docs, Sheets and Slides for further Workspace editing.
- PDF previewing and editing work on both gemini.google.com and the mobile apps while most other file types including Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown and code are editable on the web only.
- Users can expand files to a full-screen canvas, type edits manually or highlight text to ask Gemini questions or prompt automated changes, but access to some features depends on eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plans like AI Pro and AI Ultra and regional rollout.
- Google and reporters stress that generated files are intended as editable starting points that still require human review for accuracy and suitability, and businesses are advised to pilot narrow templates and keep reviewers in the loop.
