Google’s Data Center Power Demand Doubles, Tests 24/7 Carbon-Free Ambition

Rapid AI growth has driven annual power use to 30.8 million MWh, with hourly carbon-free matching still falling short of targets.

  • In 2024 Google’s data centers consumed 30.8 million MWh of electricity, more than double the 14.4 million MWh used in 2020 and representing 95.8% of the company’s total demand.
  • Power usage effectiveness improved marginally to 1.09 last year, nearing the theoretical ideal and leaving little room for further efficiency gains.
  • Hourly carbon-free electricity matching reached 66% in 2024, but regional disparities ranged from 92% in Latin America to just 5% in the Middle East and Africa.
  • To bolster clean power supply, Google has contracted over 1.3 GW of new solar capacity in South Carolina and Oklahoma and is investing in geothermal projects.
  • The company has also committed to long-term nuclear contracts, including 200 MW from Commonwealth Fusion Systems and 500 MW from Kairos Power’s small modular reactors, though delivery is not expected until the early 2030s.
