- Google told users it will begin removing access to Google Assistant on Sept. 4, 2026, and says the phased rollout may take several weeks to reach all eligible devices.
- The change applies to Android phones and tablets and will also convert paired hardware such as Wear OS watches, compatible headphones, and Android Auto projected from a phone to Gemini.
- Once a device is switched, users cannot switch back to Google Assistant and the replacement will be automatic for devices that meet Gemini’s minimum system requirements in regions where Gemini is offered.
- Some devices are excluded for now, including cars with Google built-in and many Google TV and Google Home smart-display or speaker products, and older or low‑memory phones may retain a legacy Assistant.
- Users should check routines, smart‑home integrations and account settings before the swap because Google has not guaranteed a portable export or full migration of Assistant routines and data, which could break automations or custom setups.
