The features begin in select countries with a narrow, free beta, signaling a shift beyond ad‑hoc lookups.

Overview

  • Live Translate is rolling out now in the U.S., India and Mexico, enabling real-time two-way audio with on-screen transcripts across more than 70 languages.
  • The system detects pauses, accents and intonation, using speech models trained to isolate voices in noisy settings for more natural back-and-forth.
  • A new Practice experiment creates on-the-fly listening and speaking sessions tailored to each user’s skill level and goals inside the Translate app.
  • The beta starts for English speakers learning Spanish or French, and for Spanish, French and Portuguese speakers learning English, with daily progress tracking and no charge during testing.
  • Google credits its Gemini models for the improvements; outlets note the Practice feature challenges Duolingo, and the app’s translated speech does not imitate a user’s voice.
