Users must disable Keep activity per account to prevent chats and uploads from feeding Gemini’s training, with Temporary chats exempt from model improvements.

Overview

  • Starting September 2, 2025, Google will begin using chats and file uploads saved under the newly named Keep activity to train and improve Gemini’s AI models.
  • Users can disable Keep activity per Google account to prevent future conversations and uploads from being stored for model training, but Google will retain up to 72 hours of data before permanent deletion.
  • Google is introducing Temporary chats as an incognito mode that excludes conversations from personalization and AI training, with all messages auto-deleted after 72 hours.
  • Photos, videos, screen shares and optional live audio and video recordings can be included in Keep activity if users enable the corresponding settings, with live media capture switched off by default.
  • Google says training data will be anonymized and unlinked from personal accounts, and it is notifying users via email and in-app prompts to manage or delete their activity.
