Overview
- Google will begin removing Google Assistant from eligible Android phones, tablets and paired accessories on September 4, with the rollout expected to take a few weeks to reach all devices.
- When Gemini arrives on an eligible device it becomes the default assistant and users will not be able to switch back to Google Assistant on that phone, tablet or any devices paired to it.
- The change covers Wear OS watches, compatible headphones and Android Auto projected from a phone, while cars with Google built-in, Google TV devices and Home speakers and smart displays are not part of this mobile-focused cutover.
- Devices must meet Gemini’s minimum hardware and regional availability requirements so older phones with low RAM or regions where Gemini is not offered may keep Assistant longer.
- The move completes Google’s multi‑year shift to a generative AI assistant after delaying an earlier 2025 deadline and could break custom routines, integrations and user workflows that relied on the legacy Assistant framework.
