Overview

  • The ChromeOS launcher now warns that Steam for Chromebook Beta will stop on January 1, 2026, and that installed games will become unplayable thereafter.
  • Originally launched as an alpha in early 2022 and promoted to beta in November 2022, the initiative never reached a stable release despite Google’s collaboration with Valve.
  • High minimum requirements—an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 with 8 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended)—restricted support to a limited selection of devices and 99 compatible titles.
  • The Steam beta was part of a 2022–23 push that introduced gaming-focused Chromebooks with upgraded hardware, high-refresh-rate screens and optimized cloud streaming services.
  • Google plans to merge ChromeOS with Android and shift Chromebook gaming toward Play Store apps and third-party cloud streaming services.
