Overview
- Google will automatically begin migrating user-created Gems into Skills starting November 17, 2026, and Gems will remain usable until each account is converted.
- Google says migrated Gems will keep creators’ custom instructions, uploaded knowledge files, default tool triggers, and existing share links so work is preserved during the move.
- Skills will be available to all Gemini users aged 18 or older as Google removed the earlier requirement for paid AI Pro or Ultra subscriptions, according to an updated support page.
- Skills use a different interaction model than Gems: they are invoked inline (typically with a leading "/"), can run multiple skills together, support scheduling and nesting, and enable more automated workflows.
- The change follows an early in‑app banner and nonworking help links that caused brief confusion, and users should expect some UX details about how migrated Gems behave in multi-skill flows to be clarified before the November rollout.
