Google Tests Persistent System Status Bar in Wear OS Canary Emulator

The preview adds a platform-controlled clock and a single top-priority status indicator to watch screens to standardize time display and privacy signals across apps.

Overview

  • Google has put a preview of a persistent system status bar into a Wear OS canary emulator so developers can test a platform-controlled clock and status icons at the top of circular watch faces.
  • The bar is designed to show the current time and only the highest-priority system indicator when several exist; the canary build currently displays a placeholder star icon instead of final indicators.
  • Jetpack Compose integration will automatically opt apps into the status bar when they target newer APIs and compile against Compose for Wear OS 1.8.0-alpha02 or later, with AppScaffold and ScreenScaffold handling clock suppression and layout padding.
  • To save scarce screen space the status bar hides during scrolling and full-screen dialogs and apps can explicitly suppress it for immersive screens, restoring the time after roughly two seconds of idle time.
  • Google says the feature is only in the canary emulator for early feedback and will not appear in the imminent Wear OS 7.1 stable emulator; broader rollout timing is undecided and may depend on developer response.
