Overview
- The status bar is available only in a Wear OS canary emulator for developer testing and feedback and will not ship in the imminent Wear OS 7.1 stable emulator.
- The bar renders at the top of circular watch screens and shows the current time plus a single highest-priority system indicator such as active mic, location, connectivity, or battery.
- The preview documents clear behaviors: the bar auto-hides while users scroll, hides during full-screen dialogs and certain Material 3 components, and apps can suppress it with a StatusBarSuppression API for immersive screens.
- Apps targeting API level 35 and compiled against Compose for Wear OS 1.8.0-alpha02 or higher are automatically opted in via AppScaffold and ScreenScaffold, and developers can also opt in explicitly in the manifest.
- Google released the experiment to help developers adapt layouts and avoid duplicate clocks because Wear OS historically let apps use the full screen, and the company appears to be refining the feature for a later major release often discussed as Wear OS 8.
