Google Starts Rolling Out Option to Change Gmail Addresses

A Google support page confirms a gradual rollout that keeps old addresses as aliases, preserving account data.

Overview

  • The new feature lets users change the username portion of an address ending in @gmail.com to a new @gmail.com address.
  • Google says availability is being rolled out gradually, and the help text first appeared in Hindi after being spotted via a Telegram group.
  • After a change, the original address becomes an alias that still receives mail, and users can sign in with either the old or the new address.
  • Account contents remain intact, with limits that include up to three changes per account, a 12‑month restriction on creating a new Gmail address, and no immediate option to delete the new address.
  • Some older references, such as existing Calendar events, may continue to display the former address, which remains under the owner’s control and can still be used for sending emails.
