Google, SRP Launch Partnership to Fund and Test Non-Lithium Long-Duration Storage Pilots in Arizona

The research funding targets real-world validation of non-lithium storage to inform SRP’s pending long-duration demonstrations.

Overview

  • Google will co-fund a portion of non-lithium long-duration energy storage pilots on SRP’s Arizona grid and will analyze operational data and help shape the test plans.
  • SRP said the collaboration could cover multiple projects selected from its long-duration demonstration pipeline.
  • The utility has run non-lithium LDES RFPs in 2022 and 2024, with 2024 results still pending and 2022 winners including organic flow battery firm CMBlu.
  • The partners previously deployed large solar-plus-storage for Google, including a 250MW/1,000MWh battery serving data centres in Mesa and assets expected to lift its Arizona operations to at least 80% carbon-free energy by 2026.
  • Industry coverage notes that falling lithium-ion costs now challenge non-lithium options for 8–12 hour durations, heightening the value of targeted pilots to prove real-world performance.
