Google Shuts Down Tenor API

Centralizing Tenor for Google will force major apps to replace their GIF pickers.

Overview

  • The Tenor API was formally decommissioned on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, and any third-party API requests now fail with errors.
  • Google will keep Tenor’s website and its integrations inside Google products such as Gboard and Google Messages active even after the API shutdown.
  • Major platforms that relied on Tenor are moving to other providers: Discord appears to use Klipy, WhatsApp is migrating users to GIPHY, and X has completed a migration to an unspecified alternative.
  • User-facing effects include loss of some previously available Tenor GIFs and cleared ‘recently used’ histories on services that switched providers, because libraries and ranking systems differ across GIF vendors.
  • The shutdown reflects Google’s decision to refocus resources on core products and narrows the pool of widely used GIF APIs after regulators once cited Tenor as a key competitor to Giphy in the GIF ecosystem.
