Google Sets Timetable for Android Developer Verification and Auto‑Installed Verifier Service

The change aims to cut anonymous malicious apps by tying each app to a verified developer identity.

Overview

  • Google began rolling out a new system service called Android Developer Verifier to most Android 8+ devices this month to later check whether an app is tied to a registered developer.
  • The company will make developer registration mandatory for app installs from participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand starting September 30, 2026.
  • Developers will get two new APIs to automate registration and checks: the Android Developer ID Status API to see if a package name is registered and the Android Developer Console API to register and manage package names from CI/CD tools.
  • Google will offer limited distribution accounts for students and hobbyists that let creators share apps to up to 20 devices without ID or fees and an advanced sideloading flow plus adb for power users to install unregistered apps.
  • The initial rollout covers Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Samsung Galaxy Store, Palm Store, vivo V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps with a planned global enforcement expansion in 2027 after partner feedback.
