Overview

  • The Steam for Chromebook Beta will officially conclude on January 1, 2026, and installed games will no longer be playable after that date.
  • ChromeOS support for Steam began in an alpha release in March 2022 and moved into beta by November 2022 without ever achieving a stable launch.
  • Running Steam on a Chromebook requires at least an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processor with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, though 16 GB of RAM is recommended.
  • During the beta Google maintained a Linux compatibility list of 99 titles, reflecting limited support compared with the full desktop Steam library.
  • Google plans to pivot Chromebook gaming toward Android apps, cloud streaming and ultimately a unified ChromeOS-Android platform
